China Issues Warnings Against OpenClaw Software Amid Security Concerns
Chinese government agencies and state-owned enterprises have issued internal warnings advising employees against installing OpenClaw on work devices. Sources indicate regulators specifically instructed staff at state-owned firms to avoid the software entirely—including on personal devices in some cases.
The National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team (CNCERT/CC) flagged critical vulnerabilities, including 'prompt injection' attacks that could trick OpenClaw into leaking system keys. The advisory also warned of catastrophic data loss risks from operational errors.
Developed by Austrian programmer Peter Steinberger and acquired by OpenAI last month, OpenClaw gained rapid adoption in China prior to the warnings. Its lobster logo became a cultural shorthand, with references to 'raising a lobster' proliferating in tech circles.
